Tuna Bars a new way to enjoy Tuna
Picture this.. you are looking for a snack, but you are tired of the same old tuna sandwiches or salads. How about something different, like tuna bars! Yes you heard right, Tuna Bars. They are super easy to make, and they actually taste amazing. I know it might sound a little weird at first, but trust us, once you try them, you will be hooked.
Let’s get straight into it. Here’s what you’ll need to make about 16 tuna bars, enough for 4 people (or just you, because they’re that good).
Tuna Bars Prepping and Cooking
Honestly, the prep is super simple, but it can get a bit messy, so get everything ready before you start. You will want a dish or tin to hold the tuna mixture, and trust me, having everything lined up makes it smoother.
Tuna Bars Remixed
Feel free to add additional ingredients to give extra flavour or cuisine to your tuna bars. Soy sauce for a Asian flavour, lime and salt for a Mexican flavor, tomatos or capers for a Mediterranean flavour, mayonnaise or wasabi for a Japanese twist.
Tuna bars can also be made with sliced or grated zucchini added in. Other ingredients could be chopped bell peppers (capsicum), corn, and or carrots. These mixes are usually referred to as Tuna Slices.
Tuna Bars
Ingredients
- 1 lb tuna (500g) Diced or minced (raw tuna works best, but canned could do if you’re in a pinch).
- 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs This gives the bars some texture and helps bind everything together.
- 3 eggs eggs More binding power here.
- 1 cup cheese Who doesn’t love cheese right?
- 1 small onion Finely chopped, adds some crunch and flavor.
- 1 cup milk Keeps everything nice and moist.
- 1 tablespoon of your favorite green herbs Finely chopped (think oregano, parsley, or spring onions).
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°C (or 180°F for those of us elsewhere).
- In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, and breadcrumbs. Mix them together until they are all combined.
- Add the tuna, onion, and herbs into the bowl. Mix it all up! Don’t be shy, get in there with a spoon (or your hands if you are feeling adventurous).
- Pour the mixture into a greased tin. Any slice tin or square casserole dish will do the trick.
- Pop it in the oven and bake for 40 minutes. When it's done, let it rest for about 10 minutes.
- Cut into squares and you are good to go! Serve them hot or cold…your call.
Panko Breadcrumbs for Cooking Tuna Bars
These are Japanese breadcrumbs which are much bigger and lighter than regular breadcrumbs. This means they go extra crispy! You’ll find them in nearly all supermarkets/grocery stores in the baking or Asian section. You can use regular breadcrumbs if you cannot source Panko Breadcrumbs.
